Selection & application guide

What to Include in a Glass Flake Coating Enquiry

A glass flake coating enquiry needs more than the name of the tank or equipment. The substrate, chemical environment, temperature and complete lining system define the duty the material must meet.

Describe the substrate and existing condition

Identify steel, concrete or another substrate, together with the current coating and any visible damage. Include the available preparation method and access restrictions. New fabrication, maintenance repairs and lining over an existing surface can involve different preparation and compatibility questions.

Describe the exposure accurately

Name the chemicals and their concentrations, normal and maximum temperatures, and whether the service is immersion, splash, vapour or intermittent contact. Include cleaning fluids and cleaning temperatures. A product description such as acid resistant is not a substitute for a compatibility assessment against the actual medium.

Define the system and application process

State whether the requirement is for a mastic, a coating layer or a complete primer-to-finish system. Include the specified film thickness, application method, working time and curing conditions where these are part of the project. Mixing ratios and cure instructions must come from the exact selected product.

Include inspection and documentation needs

Provide the project specification and required acceptance checks. These may concern surface preparation, film thickness, adhesion or lining continuity, depending on the job. Ask for documentation that matches the supplied resin system and product code; data for a different resin family should not be used as an equivalent.

Make the quotation practical

Add the total area, delivery location, planned application date and expected quantity. Photos and drawings help explain access and geometry. This gives the product and commercial discussion a common basis.

Describe cleaning as well as normal operation

A lining may encounter a different medium or temperature during cleaning than during ordinary service. Include detergent or chemical cleaning, rinse temperature, frequency and duration. If the equipment cycles between wet and dry, describe that sequence. For a mixed chemical stream, give the relevant constituents rather than using only a broad phrase such as chemical water.

Why product identity matters

A glass flake label does not identify the resin, component ratio or cure schedule. Keep the exact selected grade and resin description on the quotation, application instructions and order. The vinyl ester products in this range should be assessed using vinyl ester information; an epoxy table does not establish their performance. This is particularly important when a maintenance team has instructions from an earlier product at the same site.

Quantity and schedule need the whole system

Include corners, penetrations and detail work when estimating area, and separate the layers where they use different materials. Account for application losses and the material needed for repairs after inspection. Schedule preparation, application, recoating and full cure before return to service. A short surface-dry time is not a substitute for the cure required before immersion or chemical exposure.
