Separate temporary and retained coatings
A peelable blue coating may be used where a protective layer later needs removal. A hydrophobic treatment addresses a different surface function. Define whether the coating stays on the assembly and which areas must remain uncoated.
Evaluate on the assembled process
Include connectors, contact pads, sensitive components, curing capability and rework in the review. Assess the required electrical and environmental performance on the relevant assembly. Surface water beading alone does not establish an enclosure or device protection rating.

Choose retained or removable protection
Use the required end state to narrow the range. 4200EB and CY440 are peelable materials for defined protection and rework tasks. JD1091Y is a thin hydrophobic treatment for assessment on PCBA assemblies. A removable mask and a retained surface treatment need different inspection and removal criteria, so state which areas will remain coated in the delivered assembly.
Process references for the sample line
4200EB lists six hours at 25°C or one hour at 60°C. CY440 is naturally curing and uses its own processing conditions. JD1091Y lists a 3–5-second dip, with the bath extending at least 5 mm above the highest part intended for immersion, and a 1–3 μm film. Its surface-dry reference is 2–5 minutes and hard-dry reference is 30 minutes. Check that the actual components and uncoated regions tolerate the chosen process.
Define keep-out areas
Identify connectors, contact pads, optical parts, switches, test points and other restricted features before coating. The coating boundary should be visible to the operator and inspector. Check drainage around closely spaced parts and prevent trapped material in functional openings. Include the permitted cleaning agents and maximum component temperature in the sample instructions.
Evaluate function after exposure and rework
Record initial assembly performance and repeat the relevant electrical and environmental checks after coating. Include the intended moisture exposure and cleaning cycle. For peelable materials, remove the film using the planned rework method and inspect for damage or fragments. A water-contact-angle value or droplet demonstration does not establish an enclosure ingress rating or completed device qualification.
Application Questions
Should connectors be immersed with the board?
Define keep-out regions before selecting the process. Functional contacts and openings that must remain clear need appropriate masking or a different application route.
Is 60°C curing suitable for every assembly?
Check the temperature limits of every component and material in the assembly. The 60°C route belongs to 4200EB and should not be transferred to another grade.
